OUR STORY
What happens when a Kansas University (Jayhawk) graduate marries a Kansas State (Wildcat) graduate?

Well---- it meant for years we were gifted 'House Divided" banners and signs, sweatshirts with dueling Jayhawk and Wildcat pictures printed on the front and sarcastic comments from both KU ‘Hawk’ fans and K-State ’Cat’ fans.

We were born and raised in a small town and rural area of Western Kansas. We chose to find jobs and raise our family in the Kansas City area. In the late summer of 2019, we realized our dream to move to a rural area in Eastern Kansas where we started a farm united-- Hawk ‘n Cat Farm.

To unite the interests of a K-State agronomy major with the KU plant addict we have been growing vegetables and flowers.

This activity has led us in several directions. To extend the growing season we built a high tunnel with help from the NRCS. Since we are growing plants, we of course needed “the bees”. We added an apiary that is expanding and providing us with honey.
The need to feed the bees has led to a prairie restoration project with the assistance of both the Kansas Department of Wildlife and local ecologists. The restoration project has led to propagation of native plants. Then we added a few fruit trees in the mix...all of which helps to feed the bees. The plants need compost/fertilizer, so we added "the birds" a flock of chickens and ducks to help out. The chickens are now providing enough eggs to feed us more omelets than we care to consume...so now we are selling farm fresh eggs and occasionally fertile hatching eggs. The poultry section of our farm is expanding into a chicken meat market.
This journey continues to grow and adapt along the way.
